About Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are systems that operate without a human pilot and are deployed for various underwater missions. Unlike ROVs, AUVs are robots that do not require operator input. The history of AUVs dates to 1957 when the first AUV Self-Propelled Underwater Research Vehicle (SPURV) was developed at the Applied Physics Laboratory of University of Washington, with funding from the US Office of Naval Research (ONR). It could operate at a maximum depth of about 11,800 feet and had a speed of 4-5 knots for almost four hours. It was powered by a combination of zinc cells and solid-state converters. The US Navy used SPURV to study submarine wakes. Since then, AUVs have evolved significantly in design and are being adopted for a variety of applications.

The analysts forecast the global autonomous underwater vehicle market to grow at a CAGR of 12.43% during the period 2017-2021.

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global autonomous underwater vehicle market: General Dynamics, Kongsberg Maritime, Lockheed Martin, Saab, and Thales Group:

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Boeing, ECA Group, Fugro, and Oceaneering International.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is Incorporation of new algorithm and metrics. Energy efficiency is a crucial parameter for AUVs, especially for those used in oceanographic studies. Underwater monitoring applications typically call for greater endurance, which can be facilitated by improving the battery life.”

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Technological advancements prompting development of hybrid AUVs. Technological advancements have enabled multiple functions to be incorporated into a single compact platform. This has led to the development of versatile AUVs that can be employed for a wide variety of missions. Vendors are also trying to develop designs that allow the integration of a variety of payloads and confer enhanced functionality.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Operational hindrances. The impact of hydrodynamic coefficients and fluctuations in ocean currents result in highly non-linear coupled dynamics and pose operational hindrances for AUVs in terms of trajectory control. Such factors make it difficult for AUVs to retain its control, especially in nonlinear trajectories.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
