Iminodiacetonitrile (IDAN), an important fine chemical intermediate, plays an important role in the production of PMIDA & glyphosate. This report has carried out analysis of IDAN from its production to its consumption in China, including production technology, production, producers, consumption, and price changes of IDAN, as well as influencing factor analysis for the IDAN industry. So, this report can be a guide for players who pay close attention to the IDAN industry.
China started commercial production of IDAN in 2005. At that time, output was only several hundred tonnes because of limited market size. The industrial production of IDAN started when a new production route of glyphosate, the IDAN route, was developed. Since 2006, IDAN has been gradually known by more and more domestic glyphosate producers. They made attempts to use it as a raw material, and the experiment has made progress. Since then, the domestic IDAN industry has been growing rapidly. With rapidly increasing demand for glyphosate, the production of IDAN has been expanding significantly in recent years. In 2012–2014, the national output of IDAN has kept increasing because of the increased output of PMIDA & glyphosate technical (made via the IDAN route) during the same period. However, the IDAN output decreased in 2015 and 2016, because the downstream manufacturers tended to purchase PMIDA instead of IDAN to reduce waste discharge and environmental protection pressures. Driven by the growing glyphosate market, the IDAN capacity in China increased rapidly from 6,000 t/a in 2005 to more than 100,000 t/a in 2018. The supply of IDAN in China is abundant.
In China, the output of IDAN is mainly affected by environmental policy and the glyphosate market. Environmental policy is expected to be more stringent in the coming years, which will lead to a rising raw materials cost from upstream and lower operating rates for manufacturers - downstream manufacturers also want to purchase PMIDA instead of IDAN to reduce their production waste and environmental protection pressures. However, glyphosate demand is expected to remain at a high level in the absence of a good substitute. It is predicted that China's IDAN production will decline gradually from 2019 to 2023.
With the development of technology, IDAN in China is currently at its mature period. Since IDAN is mainly used to synthesize glyphosate and has a close relationship with glyphosate production and development, forecasting the trend of IDAN production and glyphosate market is of great significance for these market players.
This report is based on data collected via various sources. The primary sources include interviews with almost all IDAN manufacturers, from active manufacturers to manufacturers that have suspended or stopped production. The detailed production and market information, as well as industry insiders' comments on IDAN, are also sourced and verified. In a bid to better understand the application of IDAN in China, the author made contact with domestic traders and distributors as well. Various secondary sources include published magazines, journals, government statistics and the author's database, etc. Data obtained from these sources have been combined and cross-checked to ensure that this report is as precise and scientific as possible. Throughout the process, a series of internal discussions have been held in order to analyze the data and draw conclusions from it.
Three key market players in IDAN production are profiled in detail along with their recent developments, namely Chongqing Unisplendour Chemical Co., Ltd, Leshan Hebang Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd, and Guang'an Chengxin Chemical Co., Ltd.
