Massively Multiplayer Online games (MMO games) are the online games that are capable of supporting a large number of players, typically at the same instance across globe. These games are played by customers using personal computer, video game console, smart phones and other mobile devices. Action genre are the top priority for the consumer and thus are highly regarded by the top companies. Major types of MMO games are role playing, real time strategy, simulations, sports, racing, casuals, etc. among others. New MMORPGs with fresher mechanics and features are taking the internet by storm regardless of the business model.

F2P category generates more revenue than its counterpart, P2P owing to its vast number of subscriptions and revenue generation through other sources.

Growth by Region

North America leads the MMO market in 2016 closely followed by Europe. The revenue generated through both the model is almost same in North America while in the case of Europe, P2P share is slightly more. However, in APAC, 4/5th of the market share is through F2P mode.

Drivers vs. Constraints

Factors such as increase in development of hardware platforms, emergence of gamification, increase in online content, growth of multiplayer games, increasing usage of virtual currency are driving the MMO market.

Though there are vast improvements, hardware and connectivity issues are constraints to the market. Added to these, longevity of the game is a concern to the developer as these games are capital expensive.

Industry Structure and Updates

The industry is highly capital intensive with minimal success rate of the games. The companies focus on building long run games so as to attain break even. In Oct 2017, InnoGames announced the mobile launch of its successful fantasy strategy game Elvenar.
