About In-memory Computing

In-memory computing (IMC) involves the storage of information in the random-access memory (RAM) of servers instead of the traditional complicated databases that operate on relatively slower disk drives. This performs quicker database management since most of the information is kept in the main memory of the computer, which enables faster access. In-memory computing enables business customers, such as retailers, banks, and other utilities, to identify the patterns of data, to analyze the huge volumes of incoming data, and to perform the operations fast.

The analysts forecast the global in-memory computing market to grow at a CAGR of 36.72% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: - Global In-memory Computing Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global in-memory computing market: IBM, Oracle, and SAP.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Altibase, GigaSpaces, GridGain Systems, Hazelcast, Microsoft, Software, ScaleOut Software, and TIBCO.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is growing use of analytics for decision-making. Analytics help decision makers determine risks, weigh outcomes, and quantify the costs and benefits associated with the decisions. The popularity of analytics is increasing because of the enhancement of techniques for data analysis, mathematical modeling, and computing technology.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is reduced memory prices and operational costs. Big data is increasing, and the prices of DRAM are decreasing every year. For instance, the price of a Dell server with the memory in terabytes was almost $100,000 in 2012. However, a server with more number of cores and a DRAM of 1 terabyte costs less than $27,000 in 2017. The declining prices of DRAM will make IMC a more affordable and feasible technology to be used in different industries. In addition, the TCO of an in-memory system is lesser than a storage system. The smaller hardware enables the storage of information more than 40 times in the same limited space, reducing the related data center costs.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is lack of industry standards. IMC does not have any standards currently. The IMC vendors are developing the technology without adhering to any standards. There are no standard tools, protocols, or application programming interfaces (APIs). This is challenging application portability and interoperability. For instance, an SAP in-memory technology expert may not be an expert in the Oracle in-memory technology because of portability and interoperability issues. These issues are slowing down the acceptance of IMC, and the adoption of IMC would have been faster if commonly agreed standards were there.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
