A scintillator is a material that exhibits the property of luminescence when exposed to ionizing radiation from X-rays and gamma rays. Scintillators are of two types: organic scintillators and inorganic scintillators. Organic scintillators include naphthalene, anthracene, and lumogen. Inorganic scintillators include materials such as sodium iodide, cesium iodide, bismuth germanate, lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO), lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO), and cesium doped with activators such as thallium or sodium.
