This 110-page study presents detailed data and commentary on periodical use from business school and other economics and business faculty about their business libraries and business/economics collections of general university libraries.  Data is based on a survey of more than 180 scholars drawn from more than 100 major research university academic departments and MBA programs in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.  Research findings are broken out by various criteria, such as type of university, MBA program or Grad/Undergrad business or economics program, scholar’s country, gender, political views, academic subject specialty, academic title and other criteria.
The study presents detailed data on the use of many specific business and economics journal, as well as popular newspapers and magazines such as The Wall Street Journal, The Economist and the Financial Times, among others, as well as leading business directories.  The study also looks at the level of satisfaction faculty have with their business/economics libraries or subject collections, and at the extent to which they can find needed materials.

Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

  • 20.44% of respondents have contributed to, read or consulted the Quarterly Journal of Economics in the past year. Use was most common at universities in the first quartile of the US News World Report rankings and least common among those in the fourth quartile.
  • 52.49% of respondents read The Wall Street Journal at least twice a month. This publication was by far most popular among respondents in the USA, where it was read at least twice in the past month by 70.25% of respondents vs. only 17.86% in the UK/Ireland.
  • Respondents were able to find a mean of nearly 90% of the research articles needed for their research projects in their own university library’s journals collection.
  • 26.47% of respondents in management read Fortune Magazine at least twice in the past month vs. only 3% of those in economics.
  • Only 32.3% of respondents from the USA rated as “excellent” the range of publications available at their library, far lower than for faculty from other countries in the sample.
