Seed Treatment Market Insights

Seed treatment is the application of chemical ingredients or biological organisms to seeds, which enables seed protectionby suppressing, controlling or repelling plant pathogens, insects, or other pests that attack seeds, seedlings or plants. This treatment also enables seed enhancement, by improving its performance post harvesting and conditioning, before the seeds are sown. Seed applied technologies, such as inoculants, herbicide safeners, micronutrients, plant growth regulators, seed coatings and colorants, among others, can also be used for the seeds.

The global seed treatment market is, currently, witnessing a steady growth, due to the increasing scope of application in the seed industry. This market was valued at USD 5,100.37 million in 2017 and is expected to reach USD 8415.9 million by 2023, with a CAGR of 10.53% during the forecast period.

Market Dynamics

Factors driving the global seed treatment market are the increase in the cost of high-quality seeds, such as GM seeds and hybrid seeds, high limitations associated with soil and foliar application of crop protection products, cost-effectiveness of seed treatment and encouraging government regulations & campaigns. While rapid growth would be witnessed in the coming years, a few factors, such as the increasing role of the use of chemicals, which is adversely affecting the environment, low adoption rate among farmers, limited dose capacity, low protection and shelf-life of treated seeds and phytotoxicity associated with use of seed treatment chemicals, are hindering the market growth. The untapped Asia-Pacific market and the increasing use of biological seed treatment agents are fostering the growth of the seed treatment chemicals market, which is expected to increase in the coming years.

Market Segmentation

The seed treatment market is segmented by application, function, crop type and application technique. The biological seed treatment market is expected to witness the fastest growth, with a CAGR of 12.5% over the forecast period. Some of the commercially available biological seed treatment agents are as follows:
By function, the seed treatment market is segmented into seed protection and seed enhancement, with the seed protection segment occupying the largest market share. Insecticides, fungicides, and others constitute the important segments in seed protection market, in which insecticides is the largest segment, with a market value of USD 1,621.2 million, in 2016. By crop type, the market is segmented into grains & cereals, oilseeds, vegetables and others, with grains and cereals occupying the largest market share and corn dominating the grains and cereals market. By application type, the market is segmented into seed coating, seed pelleting, seed dressing and others. By geography, North America occupies the largest market share followed by Europe. Asia-Pacific is expected to witness the fastest growth over the forecast period.

Recent Industry Insights

Top players in the seed treatment market are adopting strategies, such as mergers, acquisitions, and new product launches to maintain and strengthen their foot hold in the seed treatment market. In February 2017, Marrone Bio Innovations, Inc.and Groundwork Bio
Ag, Ltd. (Groundwork) announced successful seed treatment field trials of the world’s first all-biological comprehensive seed treatment. Corn and soybean crops were treated under this trial, with mycorrhizal inoculant from Groundwork and bio-insecticide, a bio-nematicide, and a bio-fungicide from Morrone.

Among various crops, where seed treatment holds significance, new products with latest technologies were developed extensively for corn in recent years. Bio
Ag Alliance announced the introduction of new corn seed treatment microbial product, named Acceleron B-300 SAT. Understanding the significance of bio-based products, Albaugh, LLC, a leading provider of crop protection products and seed treatment technology, launched a new biological seed treatment platform in 2017, named BIOST™, which enhances crop performance and return on investment of the growers, when combined with traditional seed treatment methods.
