Modern engines are built with a limited number of moving parts, a smaller opening to allow air in, and a closed underbody. The smaller opening prevents sufficient amount of air from entering and dissipating the heat formed in the engine. Vehicle manufacturers have been trying to develop intelligent thermal management systems with components with increased heat resistance and better modeling to allow proper ventilation.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is government mandate for fixing air conditioners in commercial vehicles. Air conditioners form a significant part of HVAC systems in commercial vehicle thermal management systems. Hence, increased penetration of air conditioning units in commercial vehicles will increase the value of thermal management systems used in vehicles during the forecast period. HCV drivers undertake long trips on a continuous basis to make their livelihood. Long hours of driving increase their fatigue levels and often numbs their driver reflexes, which increases the chances of accidents. A significant number of these accidents involve inattentive long-haul truckers. Therefore, the government of India intends to undertake measures that increase drivers' comfort levels and avoid build-up of fatigue.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is increased engine temperatures in modern engines. Vehicle manufacturers have been undertaking engine downsizing since 2010 to increase the efficiency of vehicles, improve fuel economy, and decrease emissions. However, downsized engine produces large amounts of heat that may undermine the operational efficiency of thermal management systems by causing one or more components to malfunction. The efficiency of thermal management systems is greatly challenged even if a single component within the system dysfunctions. As commercial vehicles are subjected to harsh driving conditions and increased engine loads, the chances of having increased engine temperatures, subsequently leading to breaking down of the vehicle, are high.
