About Low-E Glass

Low-e glass has a coating, which is thinner than a human hair and reflects infra-red and ultraviolet rays. This helps in maintaining appropriate temperature conditions in a building. For instance, during the winter season, the glass helps to trap the hot air inside the building. This thermal encapsulation helps in reducing the energy consumption of the HVAC systems, which, in turn, helps in reducing the energy bills as well as carbon emissions. Moreover, the performance of low-e glass can be increased by providing various thermal emissive coatings through which the emission rate can be effectively controlled. For instance, an asphalt material surface has a thermal emissivity of 0.88 while aluminum foil only has 0.03.

With the help of low-e glass, the heat entering the building can be reduced considerably, in turn, reducing the energy consumption for cooling. In addition, low-e glass coatings do not allow the transfer of heat out of a room. Instead, it reflects the heat back to the room, thereby maintaining the temperature. This helps in reducing the energy needed for HVAC systems.

The fluctuating raw material cost is one of the major challenges faced by all glass manufacturers, including low-e glass manufacturers. Industrial salt and soda ash are the basic raw materials needed for glass manufacturing. Any small fluctuation in prices of these components has a huge impact on the price of glass as it is directly linked to the production. Industrial salt is easily available in the market. Most manufacturers prefer purchasing bulk quantities of the salt as it helps in saving transportation and packaging costs. Buying in bulk also allows the buyers to get the product at a cheaper rate.
