A flip-chip, which is also known as a controlled collapse chip connection (C4), is a method for interconnecting semiconductor devices, such as IC chips and MEMS, to external circuitry with solder bumps that have been deposited onto the chip pads. For mounting onto the external circuit boards or other chips/wafers, the chip is flipped over so that its top side faces downward, and aligned so that its pads align with matching pads on the external circuit, and then the solder is reflowed to complete the interconnection. Owing to this side-flipping process, it is also known as flip-chip.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is growing popularity of CIPOS. TPS is the crucial component in the engine management system of modern vehicles. Hence, it is standard fitment in most of the vehicles manufactured after 1996. Additionally, the contactless inductive position sensor (CIPOS) by HELLA is gaining popularity in the global automotive market and leading to increased revenue for TPS suppliers. The CIPOS technology offers precision and easy-to-use position sensor, and a measurement range of both linear and angular sensors can be flexibly designed. In addition to flexibility, these sensors are easy to assemble and are not sensitive to the mechanical misalignment.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is high maintenance cost associated with TPS. TPS is the standard fitment in modern vehicles and has to be replaced once a failure occurs. Although most skilled mechanics can replace TPS, the cost associated with the replacement is the issue for most of the customers, particularly price-sensitive customers in emerging markets. For instance, aftermarket price of TPS ranges from $50 to $200, and emerging markets are flooded with cheap sensors ranging as low as $10. However, the price of the sensor is not alone the issue for customers, its fitment cost (labor cost) ranges between $50 and $75. Hence, the total cost of the replacement of TPS from aftermarket goes above $100 when high-quality sensors are used and can go above $60 in case of the fitment of cheap sensors.
