Austria introduced a ten-year digital road map in January 2017. It includes extending high-speed broadband coverage to Austria's most remote parts by 2020 and a digital education initiative. The current government is now developing a new digital strategy, building on the existing roadmap. In addition, in August 2019 the government unveiled a new national broadband strategy, Breitbandstrategie 2030, which targets nationwide access to gigabit-capable broadband services by the end of 2030.

A number of operators have launched subscriptions for internet protocol (IP) telephony via broadband networks. IP telephony is expected to grow in popularity in the forecast period (2021-25), given significant software advances, the rapid increase in high-speed broadband connections and the constant demand for cheaper phone bills.

Mobile subscriptions in Austria have risen slightly, by 0.9%, to an estimated 10.8m in 2020, as the crucial nature of telecoms services offset pandemic-related economic pressures. Growth will average 1.8% in 2021-25. Fixed-line connections fell during the pandemic and are expected to continue falling, by an annual average of 1.8% over the forecast period. The number of internet users will grow by an annual average of 2% over the same period.
