About Automotive High-efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter

As per the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is a porous paper or non-woven fabric filter that uses capture and dispose technology to eliminate pollutants. The pollutants that are captured and disposed by this technology include submicron particulate matter (PM) >0.3 µm in aerodynamic diameter, and PM >0.12 µm for a chemically, biologically, or radioactively toxic; hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), mostly metals. HEPA filters are categorized based on the minimum collection efficiency, that is, 99.97% efficiency for the removal of 0.3-µm diameter or larger PM.

Sharp, PHILIPS, and LG Electronics have HEPA filtration products that can be connected to the battery of the vehicle. It has a lightweight energy efficient fan that sucks in air from one side and outlets filtered air from the other side. It takes about 15 minutes for the closed cabin to attain a level of 99.90% purified air (considering the entry of outside air is restricted).

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is HEPA filter is costlier than normal air filter cartridge. The HEPA filter for HVAC cartridge has an ASP of $24. The strict emission and safety regulation for the on-road vehicle validation is the base for many new innovations within the automotive industry and adaptation of the advanced technologies as a standard applicability. There is no direct regulation that indicates clearly on the use of the of HEPA filter for the cabin air purification. The technology is developed and exists in the aftermarket. The cost in the aftermarket is around $20 per cartridge for a paper-based HEPA filter and increases as the application grows toward the premium and luxury vehicle segments. Refusing it as a standard fitment by OEMs and its high market price will become an issue with the customer when considering replacing the air filter from the aftermarket.
