About Bicycle Crank Motor

A crank motor also called a mid-drive motor or a central motor, is a centralized motor, which is connected to a crankshaft through interlocking gears. The gear at the bottom of the motor locks into the gear ring, which is placed on top of the crankshaft. The crank motor is connected to a battery, which in turn, is connected to an electronic control unit. The battery is concealed. A switch to start and stop the motor is routed to the control unit. Based on the motor power of the crank motors, the market has been segmented into three product types, namely 200W, 300W, and 400W.

They are smooth and efficient in performance. They are very popular in Europe. The main advantage of crank motors is their synergic operation with the gear system. This enables these motors to perform better than hub motors in hilly areas or slopes.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is high maintenance cost of crank motors. E-bikes have two types of motors, namely crank motors and hub motors. Crank motors, also known as mid-drive motors, are popular in Europe and North America. They are slowly gaining popularity over hub motors in APAC.
