Mobile Broadband Trends in the Middle East and North Africa

Summary

Middle East and North Africa’s population will reach 558m in 2017. The population will cross 600m in 2021 and reach 613m by the end of 2022, translating into a 2017-22 CAGR of 1.6%. Egypt (96m), Iran (81m) and Turkey (81m) are the most populous countries in the region. Urbanization rates in the Middle East and North Africa reached 64% in 2016, above the global figure of 54%. Kuwait and Qatar have nearly 100% urbanization rates due to the city-state nature of both countries, while Yemen’s 35% urbanization rate is the lowest in the region.

Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar, Kuwait and UAE enjoy above 80% penetration rates. The Middle East total, however, is negatively impacted by Iraq’s low 2017 penetration rate of 54%, given the country’s weight in the region. The penetration level in North Africa is 14 percentage points lower than the Middle East’s level in 2017.

Mobile subscriptions in the Middle East and North Africa region will top 615m by year-end 2017, about 4% increase over year-end 2016. We expect subscriptions in the region to reach nearly 737m by year-end 2022, representing a CAGR of over 3.5%, which is above the global average. Growth in the Middle East will slightly outpace North Africa.

Iran, the region’s second most populous country, will account for about 25% of the region’s net additions, with over 36m subscribers expected to be added between 2017 and 2022. Egypt and Turkey will account for around 18% and 12% of net additions, respectively.
