Total telecommunications and pay-TV services revenue will reach around US$2.8bn in 2017, up 9% from the 2016 level, to account for 3.7% of Guatemala’s GDP and grow to US$3.2bn by 2022 at a CAGR of 2.6%.
Over the next five years, it is expected that the growth in services revenue from fixed broadband, pay-TV and, most importantly, mobile data - which is expected to grow at a CAGR of about 14% as a result of increased usage of OTT and video applications - offsetting revenue losses in mobile messaging and fixed voice services areas. The near two-fold revenue increase of over US$177.4m within fixed and mobile broadband services showcases the ever-growing trend in Guatemala’s data consumption and online activity in the five years ahead.
Increases in pay-TV services revenue are expected to rise by a CAGR of over 9%, making it the third most significant shift in revenue across all sectors. Growth will be highly driven by efforts from operators to launch more affordable pay-TV plans, ultimately aiming to increase subscription rates and combat the high pay-TV piracy rate in the country. Operators such as Tigo, for example, are offering multiplay packages including pay-TV, Internet and OTT services, such as Netflix, for as low as US$44/month.
In 2017, Guatemala’s mobile services providers will generate a combined US$2bn, about 10.5% more than in 2016. Though overall mobile services revenues are set to grow at a CAGR of around 4.3% in the next five years, mobile data will present a CAGR of 14% during the period.
