Total sales in the consumer goods and retail sector in Malaysia have been growing healthily at a CAGR of 9.2% from 2012 to 2016 according to statistics from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM). Malaysia has low unemployment rates and generally rising incomes which have supported overall demand for consumer goods and the retail sector. Nevertheless, in 2015 and 2016 growth in the sector moderated slightly due to the inflationary effects of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and its implementation in April 2015, and the weakening Malaysian ringgit. However, Malaysia’s inbound tourists have continued to arrive and shop in Malaysia, providing a boost to consumer demand particularly for luxury goods.
