China had 123,993 km of railways at the end of 2016, up by 2.5% y/y. Of these railway lines, 21,741 km were high-speed rail (HSR), making China’s the longest HSR network in the world. In 2016, the railway sector saw stable growth in passenger traffic and turnover, and a slower y/y decrease in freight transportation. Freight transportation experienced a y/y drop in 2012 for the first time, and since 2014 has been constantly declining y/y. In 2016, the annual drop was just 0.5% compared with a 11.9% y/y decrease in 2015. Investments in fixed assets in the railway sector reached RMB 775bn in 2016, remaining at the same level as in 2015. Five new high-speed lines were put into operation in 2016, increasing the total length of HSR by 1903 km.
