The 86-page study gives detailed data on how 249 university leaders perceive the effectiveness of their university student retention effort and specific data is presented for their views on certain key retention-oriented student services such as tutoring, academic advising, financial aid and student personal counseling, as well as retention training for faculty, efforts to foster student inclusion and much more.  The study also includes the opinions of university leaders on how their universities foster retention of key student groups and demographics with specific data for their views of the retention effort for international students, and ethnic and racial minority students.

Survey participants give their opinion of what are the best features of their university’s retention efforts, and evaluate their own personal level of involvement in the retention effort.

Data in the reports is broken out by a broad range of criteria including: age, gender, academic title, and compensation level of respondent, and university ranking, public/private status and country of origin of the respondents affiliated institution. The sample is comprised of deans, provosts, chancellors, trustees, vice presidents, upper level administration directors, academic department heads, and distinguished professors.

Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

  • Asked to assign a letter grade to the overall performance of their university’s student retention efforts, 34.5% of the respondents awarded an A, 46% B, 10.5% C, 1% D, and 0% F
  • Respondents from Australian universities gave their schools poor marks for retention: 4% A, 44% B, 32% C and 8% D. Those in the UK gave high marks: 71% A, 14% B.
  • Asked about how well their institution fosters inclusion and student participation, 5% respond poor, 23% acceptable, 34% good and 23% excellent.
  • 27% of Deans, Provosts, and Chancellors report that they are significantly or deeply involved in the student retention effort.
