Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by hyperglycemia, or an excessive amount of blood glucose. Diabetes results when there are defects in insulin production or usage, or a combination of the two. Insulin is a hormone that allows cells to convert sugar (glucose), starch and other food into energy. It is produced in the beta cells of the pancreas and promotes glucose uptake by cells in the body. Insulin further converts excess sugars to glycogen, which is stored in the liver and muscles. If excess glucose builds up in the blood and cannot be used, cells are starved for energy.
