This highly detailed 181-page report presents the results of a survey of 54 higher education assessment administrators, relating their best practices and advice, and data on their program and technology use, budgets and expenditures, personnel policies, relations with faculty, testing policies and much more.

Just a few of the report’s many finding are that:

  • On average, 55.56% of diagnostic tests administered to incoming students are web-based.  Examining trends by type of school, community colleges have the highest percentage of web-based assessments (87.33%), while research universities have the lowest (32.00%).
  • Respondents most commonly said that ACT scores are a “modestly effective predictor” of student performance (32.73%) or a “good predictor” (23.64%).  Four-year degree institutions were most likely to say they are an “excellent predictor” (22.22%), with 0.00% of community colleges and research universities believing so.
  • only 5.45% offer a standardized test in Library Services/Information Literacy
  • Research universities are most likely to describe student affairs departments as “very involved” in assessment efforts (42.86%), followed by four-year degree granting institutions (14.81%).
  • The mean budget for the public college assessment offices in the sample was $225,000
  • About a quarter of schools have an “assessment day” or “assessment period” (25.45%).  They are most common at research universities (42.86%).

Data in the report is broken out for public and private colleges, by level of tuition, enrollment level and institutional type.
