Japan is the world's third-largest telecommunications market by revenue, after the US and China, with total revenue estimated at US$82.2bn in 2017, of which 86.5% was accounted for by mobile services.

The mobile subscription rate will grow at an annual average of 2.2% in 2018-22; fixed lines will continue to fall, at an average annual rate of 1.3%. The internet penetration rate will grow by a modest annual average of 0.6% in 2018-22.

Japan's telecoms market will remain competitive and liberalised. The country will remain at the forefront of rolling out 5G technology, even offering opportunities to foreign telecoms equipment suppliers.
