Japan is the world's third-largest telecommunications market by revenue (after the US and China), with total estimated revenue in 2019 of US$78.5bn, of which 87% was accounted for by mobile services.

Mobile subscriptions will grow at an annual average rate of 1.6% in 2020-24 (the forecast period), whereas the number of fixed lines will fall by an average of 0.7% a year. The number of internet users will grow at an annual rate of 0.5% during the forecast period, with the country reaching an internet penetration rate of 90.1% in 2024.

Japan's telecoms market will remain competitive and liberalised. The country is near the forefront of fifth-generation (5G) technology, which will offer transmission speeds 10-100 times faster than current fourth-generation (4G) networks. The roll-out of commercial 5G will begin in early 2020.
