The livestock sub-sector is an important and integral component of Nigeria’s agriculture and is a major source of household wealth and food security. Livestock sector accounts for one third of agricultural GDP. Unlike agricultural crops, very little livestock or their products are exported. Traditional methods of farming is prevalent largely in Nigeria. However, farmers are shifting to scientific methods at a fast pace, giving boost to compound feed consumption. The compound feed market in Nigeria is expected to grow at a healthy CAGR of 6.2% during the forecast period.

Nigeria has a huge potential for meat and milk production because of large livestock population and relatively cheap labor. With increasing literacy, growing affluence and favorable government policies, technological advancements are expected in the livestock industry. Demographic expansion, changing dietary habits and strengthening economic conditions have led to increased consumption of meat and milk products, creating a huge potential for livestock industry and subsequently to the compound feed. However, the conventional methods of production, overgrazing, poor infrastructure, the need to educate farmers about technologies restrain the growth of the compound feed industry.

The domestic demand of meat and animal products are unmet in Nigeria and the country import millions worth of meat from surrounding countries. This demand-supply gap created a need to increase the yield of animals and provide animals with balanced feed. Poultry farming is preferred over other farming activities, having mix of both small-scale and commercial sectors. Commercial sector is the major consumer of poultry feed. Ruminant animal production plays important economic role as they provide milk, meat, manure, etc. which eventually give employment in rural area. The aquaculture sector includes small, medium and large scale marine and freshwater fishing. Aquaculture is the fastest growing sector in Nigeria generating economy and employment. The aquafeed sector is expected to grow at the fastest CAGR of 7.4% for the next five years.
