The upward trend of per capita meat consumption in Colombia is expected to continue through 2030 associated with growing affluence as a result of strong economic growth. The per capita meat consumption is projected to reach 63 kgs by 2030 from 55kg in 2014. The livestock sector in Columbia grew parallel to the increase in meat consumption and the production has doubled in the last 2 decades. The Colombian Compound Feed market was valued at $3.1 billion in 2016 and is expected to reach $3.7 billion by 2022.

Urbanization, growing affluence and corresponding shifting dietary patterns has augmented the livestock industry growth in Colombia. Adoption of scientific methods of farming and increased industrial production has led to increased consumption of compound feed by the livestock industry. The demand for raw materials such as corn, soy based products will continue to expand in tandem with the growth in livestock sector. The country is majorly dependent on imports to meet the demand for expanded feed supplies due to consequent poor agriculture performance. The substantial dependence on imports for the raw materials subjects the production process to market volatility and price fluctuations. Compound feed accounts for less than half the tonnage fed to livestock, thereby, providing huge potential market for the manufacturers.

The beef consumption has declined steadily due to relatively cheaper poultry prices and challenges in beef production. The sector is largely dependent on pastures and compound feed accounts for a very little share of beef production system. Consumers’ shift toward more livestock calories is not replicated in the dairy sector. The demand for dairy and dairy products has been stable for over two decades. The dairy sector accounts for a small share of feed consumption with very little innovations in the production process. However the key players in the dairy industry are opting for vertical integration along with focus on animal health, nutrition, and husbandry improvements. This is impacting the ruminant feed industry positively.

Per capita pork consumption has increased gradually in response to growing affluence and has filled the decline in per capita beef consumption. Attractive policies from the Government, modernization, vertical integration and technological advances are strengthening the position of swine industry in Colombia. This growth in pork production is boosting the feed consumption. However, problems such as longer production cycle and higher costs of production are limiting the growth of pork production. The government is more focused on development of poultry sector to increase meat supply. The poultry sector accounts for more than half of the meat consumption in Colombia. Intensive production systems, vertical integration and rising awareness about meat safety are the key factors responsible for growth in poultry feed consumption.
