Animal feed is highly profitable, efficient and dynamic sector in Mexico. Mexico is the fourth largest producer of compound feed in the world with around 450 feed plants. The country is expected to show static growth in the sector with the growing focus of producers and consumers on innovative technology. The growth in the market is attributed to economic stability, changes in dietary patterns and rising focus on exports of meat.

The steady growth in the compound feed sector has resulted in parallel demand for grains as major inputs. Due to the initiative by the Government to reduce imports of grains and ready availability of grains due to compound farming around 65% of the raw materials used for feed production are domestically produced. Sorghum, soy and corn are the most consumed grains for production.

The feed produced both by integrated companies and commercial producers is utilised completely for domestic consumption. Due to the adoption of scientific methods of farming the consumption of compound feed is more in big farms and integrated firms account for around 60% of total feed production in the country. Tyson and JBS are the major integrated producers in Mexico while Purina and Evialis are the two biggest commercial producers. Major players are focussed on introducing cheaper and innovative products in the market and increase awareness among the farmers by novel marketing strategies to expand consumer base.

Mexico is the fifth largest producer of eggs and ranks fourth in poultry production in the world. Intensive production practises by large scale producer’s makes poultry section the biggest consumer of compound feed and accounted for 50% of the consumption in 2016. The rising demand for poultry products driven by economic stability and vertical integration in the sector is expected to maintain the steady consumption rate of 4.5% during the forecast period. Aquaculture is on the upward curve in Mexico. The growth in the market is expected to be high during the forecast period owing to huge Government investment in the sector and rising global demand for fish. The major aquafeed producers are fighting for market dominance by product innovation and expansion in the country and bank on the lucrative early saturation stage of the aquaculture industry. Pet food and horse feed are generally imported and is the opportunity segment with potential for steady high growth.
