The livestock industry in Thailand is fragmented with family owned small scale farms at one end and large scale export oriented consolidated business at other end. Demographic expansion, economic stability and technological advancements have meant changes in traditional roles of livestock and has led to accelerated consumption of livestock and related products. Industrial feed plays an important role in the food safety regime of the Government to promote Thailand as the “Kitchen of the world.” The animal feed industry in Thailand is aiming for self-sufficiency to meet domestic demands. In the current scenario, the feed industry is dependent on imports of important raw materials like Soybean, corn, by products of oilseeds, Fish meal, etc. The Government is supporting the domestic feed producers and reduce dependence on imports to make Thailand the hub of Asian compound feed industry. The compound feed industry in Thailand is expected to grow at the CAGR of 5.4% during the forecast period.

Frequent disease outbreaks has affected the exports of the pork and poultry products, thereby creating demand for compound feed. The emphasis of the Government to follow international food safety standards in the agri industry including meat production has led to increased consumption of compound feed across all animal production systems.

Thailand has one of the world’s largest poultry industry and has played major role in the development of livestock sector in Thailand. The poultry industry in Thailand has transformed from backyard farming to an export oriented business. The chicken meat production is expected to grow at the annual rate of 5-7% in Thailand to fulfil growing exports market. The growing domestic consumption of poultry meat as a cheap source of protein and less cost of production are other reasons for growth in poultry feed industry. The poultry industry in Thailand is consolidated with focus on technological advancements creating demand for poultry feed. Poultry feed accounts for around half of the compound feed market share and is expected to grow at the CAGR of 5.6% during the forecast period.

The Pig and pork sectors in Thailand has developed gradually in the last two decades since Thailand became a member of the WTO. The pig sector has slowly adopted scientific methods of farming as the mandate from Agricultural Standards Act which calls for Good Agricultural Practices for Pig Farms. Industrialization of production systems has led to decrease in number of small and medium sized farms, simultaneously leading to increased pig populations due to up-scale production. Traceability to tackle safety issues of fresh meat and pork products has been in process since 2006. The farmers are aiming for price stability of pork and cater to exports market. Integrated business, focus of meat safety, systemic farming methods and exports aspirations will maintain a healthy consumption rate of swine feed during the forecast period.
