Initially, livestock industry was just a side-line for the farmers of South Korea. However, it has faced new era by launching animal feed factories at primary level. Livestock industry has continued to develop parallel with high economic growth of the country. The compound feed industry in South Korea has evolved with the livestock industry and was valued at $8.7 billion in 2017. The market is estimated to grow at the CAGR of 2.3% during the forecast period.

Development of environment-friendly livestock farming systems for construction of conditions for eco-friendly livestock industry is a major driving factor for the compound feed industry. Prevention and control of animal diseases is another driving factor for growth in consumption of compound feed in the country. Development of advanced specifications and new techniques for product improvement to enhance the effectiveness of the feed collectively by Government, research institutes and manufacturers is expected to maintain the steady growth rate during the forecast period. The manufacturers are also focussed on development of differentiated products which can compete at global level. However the major restraints faced by the industry are increase in regulation, climate change, and distrust among consumers due to livestock manure and bad odour.

The top three agricultural products after rice in South Korea are pork, beef, and milk. The swine industry represents around 30% of the compound feed consumption. The pork feed segment is estimated to be the fastest growing segment at the CAGR of 2.4% during the forecast period. Rising incidences of diseases in the poultry and ruminant sector such as avian influenza and mad cow diseases has restricted the growth of the segment. The rampant industrialization in both the industries and rising awareness among the farmers about the benefits of compound feed and feed additives is creating opportunities for the ruminant feed and poultry feed segment.
