Thailand is the largest producer of vehicles in the ASEAN region and the 12th largest in the world. With a strong presence of Japanese manufacturers, Thailand is a key player in the global manufacturing network for Japanese vehicles. In the last decade, it has also become a major production and export hub for pickup trucks, small-engine cars and motorcycles. Motor vehicle exports accounted for 9.1% of the total value of Thai exports. However, Thailand’s automotive sector has shown some volatility in the last few years: in 2011, the country was affected by severe floods; in 2013, it experienced a sharp economic slowdown; and, in 2014, a government coup took place. In spite of the negative trend in production and sales registered, since 2016 the industry has experienced a slow but steady growth which is forecast to be consolidated in 2017.
