The growth of China’s beverage sector remained stable in Q3 2017, supported by increased sales of high-end baijiu. The total sales revenue of the 17 listed baijiu producing companies in Q3 2017 jumped by 55.6% y/y to RMB 40.2bn. All three major high-end baijiu producers reported strong revenue growth in the period. Kweichow Moutai’s revenue reached RMB 18.3bn, up by 115.9% y/y. Wuliangye’s revenue rose by 43% to RMB 6.4bn and Luzhou Laojiao reported a revenue increase of 32.5% y/y to RMB 2.2bn. With the increasing demand for high-end baijiu, some major baijiu producing provinces put in place special policies to support industry upgrades and M&A activities. In September 2017, the government of Sichuan province issued guiding opinions on the structural reform in the baijiu subsector that aim to increase competition in the he high-end baijiu market, the China Securities Journal reported. According to the guiding opinions, the production of baijiu in Sichuan province will make up more than 30% of the national baijiu production in 2020. The total sales revenue of baijiu in the province will amount to RMB 350bn, accounting for over 40% of the country’s total baijiu sales revenue in 2020.
