Mexico’s construction sector accounted for 8% of the country’s GVA, 5.6% of FDI inflows and 8.1% of the labour force in 2016. Construction activities followed a downward trend during the first nine months of 2017, as a result of lower government spending on infrastructure projects and weaker performances by building construction and specialised construction work. Public expenditure cuts are expected to continue to affect the sector in 2018. Ongoing negotiations on the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), initiated by US president Donald Trump in 2017, are putting additional pressure on the sector’s performance. Political uncertainty is exacerbated by the presidential elections due in Mexico in July 2018. However, the medium-term sector outlook is promising, given Mexico’s growing population, its expanding middle class and the improving performance of its manufacturing sector.
