The wood and paper sector is one of Brazil’s most competitive industries on an international scale. The main advantages of the country are the abundance of available land, the favourable soil and climatic conditions and the high forest productivity. Additional factors that shape the competitiveness of the sector are the solid investment in tree genetics improvement, the widespread adoption of forestry certification systems, the vertical integration of value-chain activities and the energy selfsufficiency of the major players. In 2017, Brazil had the world's seventh largest certified area of planted forests, covering 6.4mn ha, according to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The country also ranked among the top ten biggest producers of wood and paper products, being the global leader in the segment of hardwood pulp from eucalyptus.
