The global self-consolidating concrete (SCC) market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.35%, during the forecast period, 2018 to 2023. The SCC was developed around 25 years ago and has since been gaining popularity among the contractors and architects in the developing countries, primarily for use in precast and repairing applications. However, its usage has also increased in the new construction application segment.

Non-requirement of Vibration Process

Self-consolidating concrete, also known as self-compacting concrete, is a mix of concrete which possess a moderate viscosity, high deformability, high segregation resistance, and low yield stress. Self-consolidating concrete is highly fluid mix and has distinctive features which allows it to set in the shape of the texture of the mold very closely. SCC does not require tamping after pouring and is closely attached to self-levelling, and can easily flow through the framework and obstructions. Moreover, self-consolidating concrete is less labor intensive in comparison to conventional concrete mixes. Self-consolidating concrete helps in the removal of vibration related problems and is easy to apply.

Precast Concrete Applications are expected to Increase

The precast concrete segment accounts for the major consumption in the global SCC market. It consist of a range of products including flooring units, architectural cladding, masonry (blocks and walling), paving, piles & foundations, roof tiles, drainage, railway products, and structural components. Typically precast products share the service life of the structure on which they are utilized. For example, concrete blocks are commonly used in the frame of buildings, particularly in cavity wall construction for housing. They will become waste only when the structure is demolished or has its layout changed. Moreover, precast concrete products can be crushed to form recycled aggregate and can be reused in a number of applications. All such factors have contributed to the growth of this segment.

Europe Dominates the Market

Europe is the current leader in the world for SCC and is expected to grow at a steady rate during the forecast period. The increased consumer emphasis on low-noise construction activities, the growing popularity of low-fines SDC (Smart Dynamic Concrete), and the gradually recovering construction and housing sector in Europe, in the recent years, are some of the factors contributing to the growth of the studied market in this region.

Major Players: BASF SE, CEMEX Group, LafargeHolcim, Unibeton Ready Mix, and UltraTech Cement Limited, amongst others.
