Drilling activity requires circulation of drilling mud, which acts as a lubricant, as well as means of removing downhole cuttings generated while drilling. During the circulation, this mud gets contaminated. Once circulated, the drilling fluid is either disposed or recycled for recirculation. In either case, processing of the drilling mud is required. Shale shakers and desanders are an integral part of drilling mud processing and are required to remove the drill cuttings from the circulated mud. According to the American Petroleum Institute, about 1.2 barrels of drilling waste is generated for every foot drilled, indicating the importance of mud processing systems during drilling.
Growing Offshore Drilling Activity to Drive the Market
During 2014-2017, the breakeven oil prices for offshore production have declined significantly. For instance, as of 2017, some of the North Sea fields’ oil production breaks even at as low as USD 25 per barrel. The offshore oil production cost is expected to further reduce during the forecast period owing to technological development and increasing focus on efficient operations. Moreover, if new significant oil & gas projects are not started, the oil supply is expected to fall behind the demand. Therefore, the oil prices are expected to witness a substantial increase during the next five years owing to growing demand. Hence, increasing oil prices and lower offshore production breakeven costs are expected to drive the offshore drilling activity during the forecast period.
During offshore drilling, the drilling fluid requirements are very specific as the offshore wells have smaller margin for error in terms of maintenance of mud pressure. To meet these requirements, before recirculation of the mud, almost all of the impurities including drill cutting needs to be removed. Hence, the requirements of the solid control systems are more complex for offshore drilling than onshore drilling. The government regulations in offshore drilling activity are more stringent as compared to onshore activity. To meet these requirements and regulations, operators have to deploy complicated and expensive shale shaker and desander systems. Hence, the growing drilling activities, particularly in the offshore areas are expected to have a positive impact on the shale shakers and desanders market during the forecast period.
Liberalization of Oil & Gas Sector to Drive the Market in South America
In order to attract investments in the oil & gas industry, the countries in South America are taking certain steps to liberalize the market. For instance, in Ecuador, the oil exploration and production (E&P) blocks were opened for bidding in January 2018 and were offered with new terms, according to which producers will be paid with oil that can be sold to the local refineries. The new terms allow the producers to benefit from volatility in oil prices.
Similarly, in Brazil, the country have allowed private operators to explore and produce from the oil & gas reserves, which was previously controlled by only Petrobras. In Argentina, since 2015, the government has put in place business-friendly policies to invite the investments in oil & gas sector to spur the economic growth. The liberalization of the market is expected to drive the investments in the oil & gas upstream industry. The growing investments in the upstream sector are expected to drive the drilling activity in the region, in turn supporting the market growth during the forecast period.
