Ireland Power Market Outlook to 2030, Update 2018 - Market Trends, Regulations and Competitive Landscape

Summary

Ireland’s economy is an open system, dependent on international trade and other services. It witnessed huge growth in the mid-to-late 1990s, also known as the Celtic Tiger period; focusing on trade, industry, investment, and high-tech industries.

However, with the onset of the global financial crisis, it fell by 3.9% in 2008 and 4.7% in 2009 (IMF, 2017). The property and construction sectors were the most affected, and as a result the export sector, which is dominated by multi-nationals, became the most important sector in the Irish economy (CIA, 2018).

Between 2000 and 2017, power consumption increased (majority of which was generated from fossil fuels, especially gas), due to economic growth and rising residential consumption. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.5%, and residential demand grew despite population growth falling to 1.3%, owing to increased use of electrical appliances.

Furthermore, the austerity measures led by the government on the use of renewables, and the implementation of generous incentives has led to the scaling up of renewable power capacity. Renewable power capacity grew at a CAGR of 21% during the 2000-2017 period, the highest of all fuel types. The increasing share of renewable sources will open up a wide variety of investment opportunities and position Ireland as a leading exporter of power to the UK and mainland Europe.
