Hospitals in Florida
The Hospitals industry in Florida has fared well over the five years to 2017. Despite Florida's unwillingness to expand its Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the legislation has increased the number of Floridians covered by health insurance. This growth has had a marked effect on industry operators. With more residents able to purchase health insurance for the first time under the ACA, more people have been able to pay hospitals for care, rather than arriving at emergency centers and leaving without paying their bills. Over the five years to 2022, industry revenue is expected rise at a slightly accelerated rate. Continued growth in the number of people aged 65 and older will drive demand for industry services.
This industry includes operators licensed as general medical and surgical hospitals that provide surgical and nonsurgical diagnostic and medical treatment to inpatients. Hospitals maintain inpatient beds and usually provide other services, including outpatient, operating room and pharmacy services. The industry excludes psychiatric and other specialty hospitals.
