Optometrists in Texas

Several factors, including a swelling elderly in-state population, rising per capita disposable income and more individuals with private health insurance have all contributed to the industry's recent healthy growth and continued positive outlook. The number of elderly in-state residents who qualify for Medicare is projected to increase over the next five years, which will principally drive the industry forward. The structure of the industry is currently in flux, as the number of sole optometry practitioners gives way to consolidated optometry practices. The high uninsured rate has constrained demand for optometrists during the recent period and will continue to do so over the five years to 2022.

This industry includes practitioners with a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree. ODs examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases, injuries and disorders of the eye and associated structures. Operators may also prescribe and sell eyeglasses, contact lenses and vision therapy. These practitioners operate private or group practices in their own offices or in facilities like hospitals. The industry does not include ophthalmologists (i.e. medical doctors who are trained to perform eye surgery).

This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
