This study presents highly detailed library satisfaction demographic data from a representative sample of approximately 1,100 college students attending 4-year colleges in the United States.   The study imparts highly specific data on student evaluation – of the overall library – and of specific services such as:  the range of databases available and quality of training to use them, the library’s hours of operation, electronic reserves services, printing and photocopying services, the library website, quality of technical help in using library information technology, and performance of the reference staff.  In addition, survey participants relate in an open-ended question what new features that they would like to see in their libraries.

Data in the report is presented in the aggregate and then broken out separately for seventeen different variables including but not limited to: college grades, gender, income level, year of college standing, SAT/ACT scores, regional origin, age, sexual orientation, college major and other personal variables, and by Carnegie class, enrollment size and public/private status of the survey participants institutions of higher education.

Just a few of the 145-page report’s many findings are that:

  • Asked about whether their library is available when needed, 58.5% find it is virtually always open when needed, 25.5% say library hours are fine but extended hours might be nice, 13% are satisfied but would welcome extended hours, 2.5% indicate library is not open when they need it and 0.5% did not answer.
  • While students were generally quite satisfied with the range of databases provided they were less satisfied with the training that they received on how to use them.  Close to 6% were either very dissatisfied or dissatisfied and 24.75% considered themselves only somewhat satisfied.
  • Cohorts with students expressing the highest satisfaction with library printing facilities are those at schools with the highest enrollment (82.5%), freshman (84%), those who are very religious (81.5%), and those with the lowest ACT/SAT scores (83.5%).
