The Europe Clinical Nutrition Market is expected to register a CAGR of 6.2% during the forecast period. The major factors attributing to the growth of the market are increasing the prevalence of metabolic disorders, and high spending on healthcare. The actual number of patients undergoing diagnosis of metabolic disorders has increased over the decade, hence, there is an increase in the number of patients diagnosed.

Dietary therapy is critical for normal growth and development, to prevent acute complications, and/or to prevent long-term complications of the given disorder. A failure to follow specific dietary treatment can lead to complications and even death in individuals with metabolic disorders. Nutrition therapy for patients with inherited metabolic disorders is lifelong. The management of patients with many inborn errors of metabolism requires a multidisciplinary approach that combines both nutrition and medical management.

According to the Global Health and Wellness Survey, in 2018, about 70% of individuals who were aged 65 years and over were diagnosed with a metabolic condition in Germany. Furthermore, In these disorders, nutrition therapy is a critical component of the management to prevent acute complications, such as metabolic decompensation, and/or to prevent long-term complications of the given disorder.

Most of the metabolic syndromes result in situations where the body lacks the capability to synthesize non-essential molecules, like vitamins, amino acids, and several molecules involved in metabolic pathways. Most of these conditions can be managed only with supplementation of one or two nutrients. All these factors are helping the market growth. However, there are few factors which may restrain market growth.

Key Market Trends

Oral and Enternal is Expected to Hold the Largest Market share in the Europe Clinical Nutrition Market

Oral clinical nutrition accounts for the largest share, in terms of value, in this segment. Of the three routes of administration available for clinical nutrition, oral and enteral routes are used the most, followed by parenteral route. This is mainly because of the additional cost of processing the product/nutrient involved in enteral/parenteral routes. Until other routes of administration are deemed necessary, physicians mostly prefer the oral route, as it involves lesser complexities and costs, compared to the other two routes of administration. As long as the patients can consume food orally, their stomach and intestine functionalities are not affected, oral route is the preferred route of administration, for clinical nutrition. This is one of the reasons for the large market share, in terms of value, of orally administered clinical nutrition.

As per Germany Federal Statistical Office 2020 report, currently there about 83 million population in Germany. of these 16.2 million population are above 67 years of age and this number is projected to reach to 21.4 million in 2040. As number of elderly population is expected to increase in near future who are more prone to metabolic, neurological and other disorders which will boost the market over the forecast period.

Along with this, most of the disease conditions, in which oral route is used for the administration of clinical nutrition, are chronic conditions. For instance, in case of end stage renal disease (ESRD), the patients only have two options: opting for a transplant (which may not always be possible, due to unavailability of donor or even in cases where a donor is found, it could take anywhere between a few months to several years) or undergoing regular hemodialysis.

Specialized clinical nutrition is prescribed for these patients to reduce the burden on kidneys, such that the production of excretory products, such as creatinine, uric acid, and bilirubin, etcetera, are in control. As a patient may suffer from ERSD for a long duration, the usage of orally administered clinical nutrition in these cases would also be considerably large, thus resulting in large market share, in terms of value.
