Despite having abundant metal resources, Indonesia’s metal processing sector is underdeveloped. The country has mainly exported lower value-added minerals and imported higher value-added metal products. The basic metals sector generates just 0.7% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), a share that stayed level during the 2012-2017 period, after which the country ran a deficit of USD 6.5bn in the trade of basic metals and articles in 2017. Historically, Indonesia has been a major global supplier of many mineral metals such as bauxite, iron ore, tin, nickel, copper, zinc, lead and gold. However, the export ban on metal ores, in place since 2014, has led to a decline in export revenues.
