Plant Life Extension (PLEX) is an activity whereby the operational life span of an existing nuclear power plant (NPP) is extended beyond its designed operational life. Generally, the design life span of a reactor is around 40 years. Nuclear reactors begin to deteriorate after around 10 years of operation, mainly due to irradiation, thermal and mechanical loads, and corrosive and abrasive processes. This deterioration or aging is the major factor in deciding the limit of Plant Life Extension (PLEX). Plant life management (PLiM) helps to ensure that the plant continues to operate under optimum safety and performance parameters by repairing and correcting the aging process.Plant Life Extension (PLEX) procedures in various countries across the world follow a relatively similar process, barring minor variations based on regulatory and other requirements.
