Dental tools are employed by dental professionals to manipulate, examine, remove and restore teeth and surrounding oral structures and to offer dental treatment. The end-users for this market comprises of dental clinics, hospitals, and dental practitioners. The publisher analysis estimates global dental equipment market to grow at CAGR of 5.2% during the forecasted period 2017-2024.

The major driving factor of the global dental equipment market are upsurge in ageing population, growing demand for cosmetic dentistry growing incidence of dental caries and other periodontal diseases, and rapid adoption of innovative technologies (CAD/CAM).

The major restraining factor of the global dental equipment market are heavy taxation on dental devices and lack of awareness. The upsurge on dental disorders and increasing medical and dental tourism in emerging countries are acting as an opportunity in the global dental equipment market.

An upsurge in ageing population is one of the major driving factor for the global dental equipment market. The world population continues to grow geriatric rapidly, as fertility rates have dropped to extremely low levels in most of the regions and populace tend to live longer. According to U.S. Census Bureau, it is estimated that the global population was 7 billion in 2012, and aged 65 and above was 562 million which is about 8%.

However, in 2015, the geriatric population rose by 55 million and the older population witnessed to about 8.5% of the total population. An increasing proportion of old people retain some or all of their natural teeth. However, the dental and teeth prostheses of elder adults are prone to oral disease; this generates a requirement for maintenance and possibly replacement.

The incidence of caries has decreased noticeably among both adults and children; however, the prevalence of caries among elder adults aged 65 years and above remains high. Elder adults are at larger risk for dental caries as compared to younger adults because of poor diet, age related salivary changes, and exposure of root surfaces through gingival collapse.

Based on segmentation the global dental equipment market is segmented into products. The products segment is further segmented into diagnostic dental equipment, dental lasers, systems and parts, laboratory machines and hygiene maintenance devices. Geographically, the global dental equipment market is segmented into North America, Asia Pacific, Europe and Rest of World.

The north America is the dominating region in the global dental equipment market, due to the highest incidence of oral health problems in North America and increasing healthcare expenditure, according to American dental association in U.S. dental services expenditure is raised by 4.2% in 2015 which is about $117.5 billion, the expenses for dental services which results for 40 % of dental expenditure increased by 1.8 % in the year 2015 after increasing 0.8 % in 2014.

Dental equipment market foraying ahead with CAGR 4.9% for the forecasted period 2017-2024

Since 2000, oral healthcare has gained significant attention from the world. The rising attention is mainly due to rise in mouth & facial pain, oral infection, sore, gum disease, and so on. According to FDI World Dental Federation, globally number of people with untreated decay of primary and permanent teeth is estimated to be over 3,354 million.

FDI World Dental Federation anticipated that the number of people affected with tooth decay problems is highest amongst upper & lower middle income countries across the globe.

The number of people suffering from oral health problems is likely to increase by an average of 4% per annum according to America Journal of Dentistry. Research studies from Hiedelberg University, Germany shows global burden on oral healthcare that is anticipated to reach $442 billion per year by 2025 from $298 billion in 2016.

World Bank estimates, countries across the globe will spend an average 4% of healthcare GDP on oral healthcare till 2022. With focus towards healthcare treatment, government & public authorities across the globe are enacting plan to boost oral healthcare through various policies (like Smile Across America in USA). Dental healthcare systems continue to evolve with new innovations and introduction of wide varieties of treatment methods according to dental health editorial Dental Economics.

Dental equipment market deals with devices and instruments used to diagnose and treat dental conditions. Global dental equipment market is projected to rise at CAGR of 4.9% during the forecast period 2017-2024. Increasing prevalence of dental caries and other periodontal diseases, demand for cosmetic dentistry, rising geriatric population, dental tourism in emerging markets are some of the factors driving global dental equipment market. High cost of dental equipment is one of the factors restraining global dental equipment market.

Increasing geriatric population: Growth driver

In 2016, more than 8.5% of people across the world are aged 65 years and above according to National Institute of Health (NIH). The above percentage is anticipated to reach more than 17% of world’s total population by 2050 (~1.6 billion). Europe and Asia Pacific will be centre for aging population according to NIH, with majority of the countries in the region crossing median age of more than 50 years by 2018.

Countries like Germany, Italy, Japan, India and China are prime markets for geriatric oral healthcare according to science journal nature. Japan leads the world with most elderly population.

More than 25% of the total population of Japan are aged 60 years and above according to WHO, making it a lucrative investment destination for dental equipment market for the forecasted period. With aging population prevalence of both communicable and non-communicable diseases increase significantly.

More than 25% of the total health cases reported amongst elderly population in North America were of oral healthcare in 2015, according American Dental Association. People aged above 60 years are more likely to suffer from oral cancer, oral candidiasis, dental carries, and tooth loss conditions. Government and competent healthcare bodies across the globe are introducing cost effective oral healthcare treatment programs for geriatric population.

For example, Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) a medicare & medicaid program focusing on healthcare needs of geriatric population (55 years and above). Rising aging population, high prevalence rate of oral health problems amongst elderly, and government funded healthcare programs would supplement global dental equipment market for the forecasted period.

North America: Dominating market

North America dominates global dental equipment market in terms revenue according to the publisher's analysis. Increasing prevalence of oral health diseases, rising demand for cosmetic dentistry, favourable regulatory environment, and government health care programs are the drivers of global dental equipment market in North America.

An epidemiological study conducted by National Institute of Health US, in 2015, showcased that majority of the North American population are losing their teeth by middle age. Despite fluoridation of water supplies, tooth loss cases amongst middle aged (45-65 years) North American population have increased by an average 8% per annum since 2010.

Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA, estimated that in 2016, the number of dental visits amongst adults aged 18-64 years have increased by an average ~20% and that of children aged 5-19 years have increased by ~30%. Dental carries (cavities) and periodontitis are amongst the leading oral healthcare problems in North America.
