Last December, we attended the RAN#82 Plenary in Sorrento,Italy. In this Signals Ahead report we provide our final thoughts based on recent RAN Plenary activities and key decisions impacting the functionality and timeline of the 5G standard.

The author examines ongoing work on Release 15, including new functionality and requirements that 3GPP added to the Release. The author also looks ahead to Release 16 and the refinement of existing Release 16 study items and the introduction of new Release 16 study items and work items [largely continuations of earlier work versus outright new items] which ultimately define the functionality of the new release. All this and more in this issue of Signals Ahead.
