A number of projects on upcycling, recycling, general resource efficiency and reclamation are being undertaken in response to various EU initiatives, including the Circular Economy Action Plan and the Single-Use Plastics Directive. These projects play a key role in addressing some of the challenges faced by the fashion and textile industry, notably those associated with environmental sustainability.
This report discusses the activities of a number of these projects, including Resyntex, Tex2Mat and RecyCarb. The goal of Resyntex is to develop an open-loop recycling system which will be capable of recycling textile waste into feedstocks for producing ethanol, polylactic acids (PLAs), resins and new fibres. The aim of Tex2Mat is to develop solutions for separating the components of multi-material waste streams resulting from the manufacture of technical nonwovens for paper machine clothing (PMC), filters and sieves. And the goal of the RecyCarb project is to develop methods of recycling carbon fibre waste into dry-laid nonwovens for reuse in high grade fibre reinforced plastics.
The report also discusses the development of the Garment-To-Garment Recycling System, which was created by the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textile and Apparel (HKRITA) as a result of a four-year partnership with the Sweden-based organisation H&M Foundation.
