By the second quarter of 2016, there were 451,000 LEIs in 199 countries issued by 22 LOUs

The global financial crisis of 2008 focused the world’s attention on the instability and volatility of the financial system. In the wake of the crisis, new regulations emerged with a common purpose: to bring transparency to the financial market.

One answer was the creation of the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) – an universal code enabling consistent and accurate identification of all legal entities, including non-financial institutions, taking part in financial transactions.

Looking extensively at the structural tier-level components of the LEI and at more than 40 identifiers, the Guide to LEI and Other Codes offers a comprehensive, up-to-date examination of the codes which govern the financial system and are key to all who work in finance.
