Europe food safety testing market is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 6.13% during the forecast period (2020-2025).
  • Food safety is a credence attribute as it cannot be observed by consumers before or after purchasing the product. Thus, testing methodologies, like traceability, microbiological quality, have been implemented both at the European and national levels to ensure effective monitoring and overall control.
  • The increase in food-borne diseases, contamination in food products, and rise in consumer awareness about food quality and safety are giving rise to the food safety testing market. Moreover, strict government regulations that safeguard the processed and unprocessed food products are supporting the market growth in Europe.

Key Market Trends

Food Safety Testing Emerging as a Pivotal Point Against Surging Number of Food Frauds Cases

Europe is becoming firm with the food regulations and making compliance even stricter for manufacturers, which is exposing numerous attempts at presenting a fraud food before consumers. Thus, the Administrative Assistance and Cooperation System – Food Fraud (AAC-FF), introduced by the European Union in 2015, dedicates an IT tool that provides a platform for members of the EU Food Fraud Network to exchange information on non-compliances and potential intentional violations of the EU Agri-food chain legislation. The system revealed the requests created by member countries on the platform, which grew every year, totaling 292 in 2019. However, these requests do not show the overall cases occurring in the region, and they only act as an exchange information on cross-border non-compliances. As a result, Europeans, especially Italians, showed a greater tendency to pay a rather high average price for products that claim reduced mycotoxin, thus highlighting the demand for food safety testing.

Pathogen Testing Remains the Largest Market

Pathogen safety testing in food samples is dominated by salmonella testing as the largest segment. Nearly one in three foodborne outbreaks in the European Union in 2018 were caused by salmonella. In 2018, European Union Member States reported 5,146 foodborne outbreaks affecting 48,365 people. Slovakia, Spain, and Poland accounted for 67% of the 1,581 salmonella outbreaks. (Source: EFSA). Furthermore, the French Public Health Agency identified an outbreak of Salmonella enterica serovar Agona associated with infant formula products manufactured by the Lactalis Nutrition Santé group in France. In December 2017, 35 confirmed cases of Salmonella Agona infections among infants aged less than six months were identified in different regions of France. (Source: WHO). The increasing consumption of processed packaged food products and rapid innovation in the food industry are attributing to a significant amount of foodborne diseases, followed by stringent government regulations on food contamination, which is one of the major factors driving the pathogen testing market across the region.

Competitive Landscape

The European food safety testing market is fragmented with key players looking for greater market penetration, especially in the developed markets, such as Europe and North America, where the regulatory compliance is strictest and the public awareness regarding food authentication is also high. The companies compete on different factors, including service offerings, geographical reach, and improved technologies, in order to gain competitive advantage in the market. Eurofins, being one of the leader in the food safety testing market, has a wide range of services provided for food safety tests, such as microbiological testing, Residue testing, and others.
