The biological safety cabinet market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.21% over the forecast period to reach US$162.073 million by 2027 from US$121.408 million in 2020.

A biological safety cabinet is an enclosed cabinet used in laboratories and research centers to protect scientist and laboratory personnel from any biohazard or infection agents that occurs during the processing of contaminated materials. The cabinet is equipped with a highly efficient particle-arresting filter (HEPA) which removes infection agents such as viruses & bacteria from the air in the laboratory. Owing to its high safety and performance features, the biological safety cabinet holds high applicability in testing & diagnostic laboratories of pharmaceutical companies and research institutes. The bolstering growth in the pharmaceutical sector, owing to the growing demand for new and effective medical drugs for diseases, and favorable investment inflows both by companies and government organizations have positively impacted the market growth of the biological safety cabinet. For instance, in June 2021, India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman announced an investment of US$26.5 billion in its Pharmaceutical Production Linked Incentive scheme, where the funding will be utilized for the next five years in promoting domestic manufacturing of various pharmaceutical key ingredients and drug intermediates. Such investments will increase the demand for biological safety cabinets during the drug testing application, thereby boosting the market for the cabinets during the forecast period.

Based on class type, the biological safety cabinet is segmented into class I, class II and class III. The class II type biological safety cabinet is expected to grow at a relatively higher rate during the forecast period of the biological safety cabinet market. Class II biological safety cabinet has high usage in basic research and testing activities, and as it is equipped with a HEPA filter, the cabinet provides better protection to products, personnel, and the environment. With the growing establishment of R&D facilities for new drug production and testing, the demand for such cabinets is also expected to increase. For instance, in September 2022, AstraZeneca’s established its research & development center in the UK which consists of a new drug discovery and development platform. Owing to such investments in R&Ds for new drug development, the demand for class II biological safety cabinets is also projected to increase.

Favorable investment inflows and collaborations in the life sciences industry are creating a surge in the demand for biological safety cabinets. Biological safety cabinet owing to their safety features is majorly used in biological laboratories, research, and microbiology for personnel as well environmental protection. Various pharmaceutical companies are undergoing strategic collaborations as well as investments in new drugs and vaccine development that could cater to the unmet needs of people suffering from major diseases. For instance, according to the Indian Brand Equity Foundation, in September 2022, Bharat Serum and Vaccine Limited announced to jointly invest US$25.7 million in the manufacturing of vaccines and state-of-the-art injectables including rabies vaccines. Furthermore, in March 2022, Blackstone Life Sciences entered into a strategic collaboration with Sanofi, for the development of the treatment for multiple myeloma. Moreover, Chemo Pharma, in September 2022, announced the establishment of an R&D and new active pharmaceutical development center in Hyderabad, India. Such establishment and investments will stimulate the demand for biological safety cabinets, thereby boosting its market growth during the forecast period. However, the high material cost of the biological safety cabinet can hamper the market growth.

Recent developments:

  • In May 20221, Labconco announced the launch of its newly updated Axiom Biosafety cabinet which is equipped with exclusive features which makes the cabinet an effective tool for microbiological application. The cabinet is made with 57% recycled material and is environmentally friendly.
  • In July 2019, Telstar launched an innovative range of its class II biological safety cabinet namely the “BiOptima Cabinet”, which provides greater comfort, and high performance, and can be also used in high-risk microbiological research and toxic applications.
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific, in May 2019, launched two biological safety cabinets namely “Herasafe” and “Maxisafe 2030i”. The cabinets have the capability of self-monitoring & maintaining appropriate airflow and are designed for providing optimum protection from contamination and an exclusive user experience in bioproduction, applied research, or biopharmaceutical applications.

Covid-19 Impact on the Biological Safety Cabinet Market

COVID-19 restrictions disrupted activities on a global scale owing to the implementation of the lockdown and other restrictions on public movement. However, the growing pandemic disease led to a significant increase in the demand for vaccines and medical supplies, which increased the burden on laboratories and research centers for the production of such products. Biological safety cabinet provides personnel protection from infection or cross-contamination, and to safeguard the health interest of the researchers and scientist, they were highly demanded. For instance, according to the 2019 Interim Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines for handling COVID specimens by the Center for Disease and Prevention Control, a class II biological safety cabinet is an appropriate choice for handling COVID specimens as it provides three level protection i.e., product, person and environment.
