3D sensing technology has been widely accepted by the consumers and is now a must have feature on the flagship phones Almost all the leading smartphone brands through a variety of approaches have developed 3D sensing technology that is featured on their flagship phones However, still important questions are to be answered for the players in this ecosystem what will we see in the next wave of technology and application enhancement for smartphone 3D sensing, how will this market expand for front and rear 3D sensing, and which suppliers across the supply chain stand to gain the most from this very vital technology.

Apple the first mover Apple in 2017 launched, iPhone X, the first smartphone in the market featuring TrueDepth 3D sensing technology, which was an amalgamation of structured light technology combined with a ToF device The core components for the system are TOF sensing from STMicroelectronics, VCSEL illumination from Lumentum, dot projection from Heptagon (now acquired by AMS), and 3D module manufacturing from LG Innotek The development of FaceID in iPhone X was a result of a long term strategy for Apple, a byproduct of several acquisitions, few of which to mention are the acquisitions of PrimeSense and FaceShift in 2013 and 2015 respectively Although Apple had the advantage of first-mover, however, Chinese smartphone brands were quick in developing similar technology using different approaches.

Chinese Phone Makers Get into the Game Within a span of a year, after Apple’s iPhone X launch, Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei introduced their models with 3D sensing technology using either structured light or TOF technology Xiaomi in its Mi 8 (launched in May 2018) used NIR sensor from OmniVision, VCSEL from ams, and 3D system design by Mantis Vision. Whereas Oppo in its FindX (launched in June 2018) used NIR sensor from OmniVision, Megvii’s 3D system design, and 3D module from Q Tech On contrary, Vivo used TOF technology in partnership with PMD Technologies Infineon Technologies.

While Chinese smartphone giant, Huawei which has recently become the second-largest smartphone brand globally surpassing Apple’s quarterly sales, has also used TOF technology in its Huawei Mate 20 Pro (launched in October 2018 Huawei has a complex TOF system which apart from providing facial biometrics, also enables users to digitize live objects that they can then manipulate in 3D AR applications Huawei is using Sony’s TOF sensing technology for 3D sensing in its smartphones. With all these developments in such a short span clearly depicts that the 3D sensing game is getting much bigger than expected
