This 50-page report presents data and commentary from 25 colleges in North American about their use of free and low-cost advice on college marketing from blog, listservs, newsletters, trade associations, social media platforms, video platforms, and other sources. 

The study focuses particularly on their use of social media such as Facebook and Instagram among others, and video sites such as YouTube and Vimeo In addition, survey participants relate their favored information and advice sources for issues related to digital marketing, public relations, retention, and other areas. Survey participants also specify their favored newsletters, conferences, and other resources on college marketing. The purpose of the report is to help college marketing executives understand where their peers are going for their marketing and related information.


  • Data in the report is broken out by college size and type, by the level of tuition, and for public and private colleges and universities.  Open-ended question comments are broken out by college type or Carnegie class. 
  • Just a few of this report’s many finding is that:
  • 24% of those sampled had found useful college marketing videos on Vimeo.
  • 20% said that viewing other colleges' websites significantly influenced their own college marketing efforts.
