The country's strong ecommerce market has encouraged foreign retailers to launch online stores in Spain. French furniture retailer Maisons du Monde launched an online store in the country in April 2022. In November 2022, German retailer Aldi announced the launch of its non-food ecommerce platform in Spain. In December 2022, Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba launched its ecommerce platform Miravia in Spain. The platform features fashion, beauty, food, and lifestyle products. Meanwhile, in January 2023, TikTok announced the launch of its online website TikTok Shop in Spain, allowing companies and influencers to sell their products via the social media network.
  • Contactless payments for public transport are gradually gaining traction in Spain. In August 2022, payment company SICE partnered with Metropolitan Transport to roll out a contactless payment system in Granada for the bus line linking the city with its airport. Similarly, Bilbao's Metropolitan Bus partnered with LittlePay to offer contactless ticketing for bus services in Bilbao. The system enables travelers to tap their contactless bank card against contactless payment terminals to pay for journeys. Previously, in March 2021, Banco Santander partnered with Mastercard to install POS Transportes Urbanos de Santander terminals across all Santander Urban Transport buses, enabling passengers to pay for tickets using contactless payment cards or smartphones.
  • The proliferation of digital-only banks and fintech companies has helped drive competition in the banking space, thus boosting debit card holding. Orange Bank offers current and savings accounts as well as a Mastercard debit card. Customers can add this card to mobile wallet services such as Apple Pay, Samsung Wallet, and Google Pay. The bank had 185,000 customers as of November 2022. Meanwhile, digital-only bank Openbank (a subsidiary of Santander Group) offers a range of bank accounts and debit cards, including virtual debit cards. As of December 2022, the bank had 2 million customers.
