This report looks closely at support for law school faculty research funding. While this funding is far less important than in the hard sciences, it is still a significant factor in law school research and in the attractiveness of particular themes and law schools for legal scholars.

The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: how much financial are legal scholars getting from the government, foundation and higher education sources to support their research?  How many grants are they applying for? What are the leading fund providers? What is the outlook for grant support in the near future?  How helpful is the law school or general university grant and research support office?  Which services offered by the law school or university have been the most helpful and effective?  How much time do legal scholars spend attracting grant support?

Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

  • Respondents under the age of 44 spend a mean of 3.75% of their total work time seeking funding.
  • 7.53% of law school research grant funding came from the US Federal Government.
  • Artificial intelligence and related info technology are drivers of research funding.

Data in the report is based on responses from 109 law school faculty from 55 law schools in the United States.  Data is broken down by work title, gender, and age of the respondent, as well as by ranking, enrollment size and other variables related to the law schools with which respondents are affiliated.
