Country Report North Macedonia 1st Quarter

  • ID: 4988905
  • Country Profile
  • February 2021
  • Region: North Macedonia
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit
North Macedonia's small, open economy is exposed to developments in the EU and particularly Germany, which absorbs almost half of its exports. The macroeconomic environment is stable, but structural barriers impede foreign investment.

Political instability risk is high. The coalition government, comprising the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) and the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), has only a tiny majority in parliament and is unlikely to last a full term.

Policy will be steered by EU accession talks. The government will implement reforms to boost competitiveness, improve the business environment and strengthen institutions.
